WHAT IS HERBAL MEDICINE?

Herbal medicine uses remedies made from plants. Medical herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors but have time to take a more holistic approach to illness. Ideally, the underlying cause is addressed rather than just the symptoms of a disease. The remedies are chosen to gently support the body and help it use its own healing powers to restore balance and health. Many complaints can respond well to herbs. In her clinic, Daina has seen heart and circulatory issues, anxiety and stress disorders, respiratory problems, digestive issues, gynaecological problems and skin conditions, amongst many others.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the first consultation a detailed medical history is taken. Questions are asked about your complaint, past medical history, family history and any medications currently taken. Diet and lifestyle will also be considered. Bespoke herbal medicines, in the form of tinctures or herbal teas, are then prescribed together with any dietary advice and lifestyle suggestions which could be helpful. External applications such as creams and lotions may also be dispensed, as well as some dietary supplements. A shorter follow up consultation usually occurs 3-4 weeks later.
